Answers to Your Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Naturopathic Doctor?

A Naturopathic Doctor (ND) is a licensed physician who has completed 4 years of specialized medical school, just like conventional doctors. However, NDs receive unique training that sets them apart.

What makes NDs different?

Education: NDs study the same medical sciences as traditional doctors—anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and pharmacology. But they also master natural healing approaches like:

  • Clinical nutrition and therapeutic diets
  • Herbal medicine
  • Homeopathy
  • Hydrotherapy techniques
  • Physical therapies
  • Mind-body medicine
  • Lifestyle counseling

Philosophy: The key difference lies in their approach to your health. While conventional medicine often focuses on treating symptoms and diseases, NDs emphasize:

  • Finding root causes of health problems
  • Supporting your body's natural healing ability
  • Preventing illness before it starts
  • Treating you as a whole person—not just isolated symptoms

The bottom line: NDs combine the best of both worlds—rigorous medical training with natural, gentle therapies that work with your body rather than against it.

Are you an M.D. or D.O.? Can you prescribe medications?

I am a licensed Naturopathic Doctor (ND)—not an M.D. or D.O.

The State of Texas does not currently license or regulate naturopathic medicine, so NDs practicing here cannot prescribe pharmaceutical drugs or perform certain medical procedures. My Texas-based care therefore focuses on safe, natural, and non-invasive therapies.

I do, however, hold active ND licenses in other states that formally recognize naturopathic doctors as primary-care physicians and grant prescriptive authority within those jurisdictions.

Do you take insurance?

We do not accept insurance, as Texas has not yet approved coverage for naturopathic services and insurance companies generally do not reimburse for this specialized care. However, this provides a unique advantage: it allows me to dedicate the time needed for truly comprehensive, personalized wellness support—free from insurance restrictions. Insurance companies typically focus on disease management, not holistic wellness, which does not align with my philosophy or your goals for vital health.

Payment options: All major credit cards are accepted. Many of our patients use their HSA or FSA accounts to pay for services and supplements—we’re happy to provide the necessary documentation for reimbursement.

Investing in your health is invaluable, and many patients also choose to save or use crowdfunding options, recognizing that transformative, individualized wellness care is worth every penny. As naturopathic medicine continues to gain recognition, we remain optimistic that broader insurance coverage will be available in the future.

What should I expect at the first appointment, and how many follow-ups are needed?

Your first appointment will be a detailed, hour-long consultation focused on your individual health concerns, goals, and a personalized plan using natural therapies and lifestyle strategies. For more complex or chronic issues, a longer initial appointment may be recommended to ensure thorough, comprehensive care.

The number and frequency of follow-up visits depend on your unique health situation, how you respond to treatment, and your readiness to implement changes. Each care plan is customized to support your progress toward optimal health.

Where are you located and are virtual appointments available?

I am based in Houston, TX. While there is a physical location here, I primarily offer telehealth appointments to give you flexible, convenient access to care from anywhere. In-person visits can be arranged on a case-by-case basis. If you need care in a hospital setting or have specific needs, we can discuss those individually to ensure you receive the best support.

What are the common conditions seen?

Dr. Andrea is comfortable and experienced in addressing a wide range of health concerns, including but not limited to: autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular conditions, chronic fatigue and pain, chronic infections, digestive issues, environmental sensitivities such as mold exposure, genetic condition, hormone imbalances, menstrual disorders, neurological conditions, narcissistic abuse recovery, pre- and post-surgical care, and adverse effects or injuries from medications, surgical complications, or implantable devices.

Is there an effort to license Naturopathic Doctors in Texas?

Yes—actively! The Texas Association of Naturopathic Doctors (TXAND) is working hard to secure state licensure for NDs. As a board member, I collaborate closely with TXAND and our members to educate legislators on the value and importance of naturopathic medicine.

Licensure would allow Naturopathic Doctors, who complete rigorous 4-year doctorate training, to fully practice as licensed primary care providers specializing in naturopathic medicine.

How can you help?

  • Send a quick email to your legislators via txand.org
  • Support financially—donations fuel our advocacy
  • Spread the word about naturopathic medicine and the licensure effort
  • Stay informed by joining the TXAND mailing list on their homepage

Though Texas has not yet licensed NDs, significant progress continues, building a strong foundation for future success.
